Built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast for the Dominion Line, the Commonwealth launched on . She was third of a four ship design.

Commonwealth operated on the Liverpool to Boston line. In she was transferred to the White Star Line and renamed Canopic. She made one additional run from Liverpool to Boston then entered Mediterranean service for the next 13 years.

The Canopic was requisitioned for war service between and . Afterwards, she sailed the Liverpool to Montreal route. In , the Canopic was scrapped at Briton Ferry, Wales.
