Ship History

Built at Stettin, Germany in by the AG Vulcan Shipyard for the Hamburg Amerika Line, the S.S. Hamburg was launched on . She began her maiden voyage for Far East service on sailing from Hamburg through the Suez Canal to Yokohama.

On , the S.S Hamburg began port of Hamburg to New York service. In , the Italian ports of Genoa and Naples were added to her runs.

The S.S. Hamburg occasionally served as ship of state carrying Kaiser Wilhelm II. While serving as ship of state, she was painted white. In , she carried the Kaiser to Mediterranean ports. In , the ship took him to Trondheim, Norway.

The S.S. Hamburg continued serving the Mediterranean to New York route for several years. On , she departed New York for Naples carrying former President Theodore Roosevelt on his African hunting party.

In , World War I began and the S.S. Hamburg was interned in the port of New York. A month later, she was chartered by the American Red Cross and used to transport medical personnel for service in the European theater. While under this charter, her name was changed to the S.S. Red Cross and she was painted white. When the charter concluded, she once again became the S.S. Hamburg.

When the United States entered World War I in , the S.S. Hamburg was seized by the U.S. and used as a troop carrier with the new name of Powhatan. She continued this duty for the duration of the war.

In , the Powhatan was transfered to the United States Mail Steamship Company and renamed the Hudson. In the Hudson was renamed the President Filmore. The ship was scrapped in .
