She launched on and sailed on her maiden voyage from Hamburg, Germany to the Far East via the Suez Canal on . She remained on this service for eight round trips.

On , the S.S. Koing Albert sailed from Bremen, Germany to Cherbourg, France then to New York, United States.

On , she began Genoa, Italy to Naples, Italy to New York, United States service and remained largely on this service until .

At the outbreak of World War I, the S.S. Koing Albert remained in Italy where she was seized by the Italian government in . She was renamed S.S. Ferdinando Palasciano and functioned as a hospital ship for the duration of the war.

In , the Ferdinando Palasciano was transfered to the Navigazione Generale Italiana Line. On , she recommenced her Genoa to Naples to New York route completing six trips.

In , she was renamed the Italia and used as a floating exhibition until when she was scrapped.
