About the Ship

Built by D. and W. Henderson and Co Ltd, Glasgow, Scotland, 1901. 4,438 gross tons; 375 (bp) feet long; 47 feet wide. Steam Triple Expansion engines, single screw. Service speed 13 knots. 1,170 passengers (20 first class, 1150 third class). One funnel and two masts. Steel hull with two decks.

Ship History

Launched on May 16th 1901, the S.S. Perugia was built by D & W Henderson for the British flaged Anchor Line. Her maiden voyage took place on August 12th, 1901 leaving the port of Genoa for Leghorn, Naples, and New York.

From 1901 to 1915 she ran the Mediterranean to New York route. In 1916, she was requisitioned by the British and became a "Q" ship with disguised arms. On December 3rd, 1916 the ship was torpedoed and sunk by a Submarine in the Gulf of Genoa.
